The game has Earth has not always been dominated by humans. They erected palisades of sharp wooden logs, which effectively scared away most of the beasts.
They domesticated wild animals and learned to cultivate a land rich in edible vegetables and grains. In this way, they could survive and face most threats. They learned to worship the gods who gave them their harvest, and to avoid gods who would bring them hunger, disease and death in the beast's mouths.
Some monsters, however, were too powerful to pay attention to humans. They could protect the village by scaring away other fearsome creatures, or turn to dust a small army of trained hunters, depending on what stood in the way of their hunger.
Therefore, the pagans chose to use it to their advantage...
